Amazon may be finding the public’s reaction to their new physical bookstores encouraging as they rapidly expand to other locations but they are also unintentionally driving shoppers back to indie bookstores.
As other bookstore chains are failing and closing up shop, they leave a gap of somewhere for book lovers to go. This is leading some of these book lovers to open up their own small bookstores and they are beginning to find success as they provide a new place for others to gather and gush about their love of books.
As Market Watch puts it: “This is a story of two different types of bookstores: one with vast inventory, low prices and algorithm-driven recommendations, and another that lures customers seeking tightly curated collections and a community of bookworms.”
So long as indie bookshops keep providing that experience, they should be fine.
