Women are Creating the Glass Ceiling and Have the Power to End It

by Nancy Parsons

Summary:

Nancy Parsons shares exciting insights based on her firm’s research that reveal the true reasons why the glass ceiling exists and it is not what most people think. That’s why, despite the best intentions and investments in women in leadership programs, today’s solutions are not working. It has been four decades since the Pregnancy Act went into effect in 1979 that prohibited women from being fired for getting pregnant. Yet, the sad truth is that although the barriers were supposedly lifted so many years ago, the glass ceiling continues to be an impenetrable barrier for most aspiring women leaders. Today, only 6.6 % of Fortune 500 CEOs are women and only 11% of women are top earners at these most profitable companies. Meanwhile, for more than a decade, women have consistently earned more bachelors, masters, and doctorate degrees. The bottom line is that if we stay on the current trajectory, it will take approximately 400 years to attain just 50% of Fortune 500 CEO positions. That is insane. Combine this phenomenon with the increasingly fearful environment for men executives due to the #MeToo movement and Kavanaugh hearings, and things are just made worse. The timing for the solutions in this book could not be better. What Parsons team found is that while men and women both have personality strengths well suited for leadership roles, it turns out there are inherent, personality-based risk factor differences between men and women leaders. These differences are holding women back while propelling men forward. This book also confirms that biases are more harmful to women leaders, particularly when it comes to behaviors triggered by their risk factors. Parsons’ book is packed with great insights from women executives, top executive coaches, new global research, and practical solutions that will work to end the glass ceiling. These win-win approaches put an end to pointing fingers and playing the blame game. Women Are Creating the Glass Ceiling and Have the Power to End It provides breakthrough scientific research and fresh, tangible solutions that will work for women, men, and the organizations they serve to end the glass ceiling within a decade.

With years of expertise, Nancy Parsons, the author of Women Are Creating the Glass Ceiling and Have the Power to End It, gives her advices to women, leaders and HR departments. The title of this book immediately caught my eye and made me nervous about the contente. But it hit a nerve and curiosity won. After carefully reading it, I can’t honestly say I agree with the author in many of her ideas but it does make us think and evaluate our corporate behavior and who has the most toxic behavior in the workplace. Nancy Parsons points out some very valid ideas and strategies to promote women and to grow the numbers for female leadership. It’s na interesting read as it makes you question some things and reassess your position in others. Any book that makes you think and challenge your beliefs is always positive.

I really thought this book had some really great insights on how to over come the obstacles that put a damper on climbing to the top of the leadership ladder for women. While men face some struggles as well, women do seem to have more of an issue, whether by their own insecurities or from others putting obstacles in their way, this book really addresses those issues and give for poignant advice on how to over come them. I highly recommend this to any one who is struggling with rising to the top!

This book is a helpful guide for women in leadership positions and, also for women who are looking to move up into a leadership position. This book lists out the root causes for why there is a glass ceiling for women and what women can do to remove this ceiling. Also, there are 11 risk factors affecting both men and women in leadership positions; however, several of these risk factors seem to hurt women more than men.

This was a really interesting book. It looked at the proverbial glass ceiling and what is actually keeping that ceiling in place. What I found really interesting is that the author puts forth the idea that it is actually mainly women themselves who keep that glass ceiling in place. She then follows it up with arguments and facts stemming from her research and experiences.

This book should be read by women attempting to conquer the corporate world or anyone interested in empowering women. The approach the author takes goes beyond a simple “go-girl” pat in the back sort of narrative. Before reading this book, I was naïve about the role women were taking in the business world; since movements and uprisings are the norm today, I innocently thought the battle had been won. That women had finally evened the scores as far as obtaining fair salaries, grabbing leading positions, and so. The author did her homework because the book presents accurate and quantifiable information for every claim it offers; I was impressed and a little bit disappointed. The good thing is the advice she gives out. We have the power to make a difference. Well-written.
