Dauntless Chronicles

by Willow Wren

Summary:

3 humanoid alien teens live in the Cayser System 100 years in the future. During a diplomatic event, there is a coup d'état - their planet is attacked by the Grebles, evil, angry inhabitants of the fire planet, Oburna. Zephyr, a commander, and young warrior escapes on her ship but before she can hyperspace jump, her ship gets rammed, which knocks her off course. She crash lands on Earth where she's captured and taken to Area 51, and experimented on by cruel White Coats. Her friends, Destin and Tessia Kincaid follow her, are attacked in Earth's orbit and crash land, too. The siblings are taken to Area 51 where they reunite with Zephyr. There they meet another member of the Cayser System who has been there a lot longer than they have, a young doctor about their age. They are all experimented on, sticking together to stay alive. Unfortunately, it's revealed to the Area 51 scientists that Destin has a secret power, but it drains his life force. Regardless, the White Coats use him anyway. There are races on sea and battles in space, aircraft, and locomotives, young romance, dragons, and missions and the teens must sacrifice so much for their friends and family while time is running out between being saved and Destin's draining life force.

This book presumably qualifies as steampunk. We have this civilization from the Cayser system that uses steam-powered ships to race across oceans at about 45 knots, or lurch between stars travelling through hyperspace. (I may have missed it, but I am not sure exactly what generates the steam.) This is obviously a genre not exactly based firmly on physics. However, the technology is a given. The MCs leave their planet in a hurry due to an alien invasion, get captured on Earth in Area 51, get experimented on, and eventually . . .
The writing is fun, the descriptions are clear so the story is easy to follow and get involved with. The storyline at times drifts from what I consider reasonable, and without specifying the example, the ending makes no real sense if you accept the start. There is an element of magic (one character has "mechanical advantage" and can talk to machines). However, for me there is one thing that sets it apart, and makes up for the flaws: because it is written by young adults for young adults, the characters "feel" young. They have the youthful spirit, which is extremely difficult to get from most YA writers, and because there are two authors, the males and females seem plausibly different. Well done.

I couldn't put this book down, it was that good! Very original and well written. This would make an amazing movie. Plenty of action, and never a dull moment. This book would make a great Christmas gift for all the young people in your life. I know what this Auntie will be giving her nieces and nephews for Christmas!

I loved reading The Dauntless Chronicles! Readers will be catapulted into outer side faster than the blink of an eye. Truly, an out of this world adventure created by two ingenious teen coauthors. I loved the poise, actions, and strength of Tessia, and other creatively developed characters, who fearlessly explore galaxies. Their smarts and resourcefulness are an inspiration to all as they face never ending perilous challenges. I heartily recommend this book to anyone who values science fiction. I also recommend these tales to all those who are not sci-fans—-because after reading this story, they will be! Jeffrey Bernstein, Ph. D. An Out Of This World Gripping Adventure!

My son, age 12, and I read the book together and enjoyed every moment. The Dauntless Chronicles introduces us to teenage aliens that act strikingly similar to teenagers on earth. Although they have weapons, spaceships, and super powers (which my son LOVED), they also have witty personalities, ardent emotions, and devoted bonds/relationships to their families and each other. Ultimately, we enjoyed reading about their journey because we became enamored by the characters--characters that display the same idealism we find in most Gen Z teens--an affinity for love, kindness, innovation, truth, and loyalty. As the story came to an end, my son and I both said the same thing--will there be another book? We already can't wait to read the next adventure!

A Teenage Space Adventure

"Attractive storytelling by Willow Wren and Antony Olmo drew me inside the heart of the world of gods and goddesses. The creativity of these two young authors creates an unexpected intimacy between the reader and the characters of this Multi-planetary multicultural universe. Each chapter tells the story from the viewpoint of a different character, creating a 3D hologram of the scenes and moments of this story for the readers. This is a fantastic book that I recommend you to read in your leisure time."
